Characterizing Subjective Noisiness in Hospital Lobbies

چکیده

The present study was conducted in the lobbies of 16 Taiwanese urban hospitals to establish what contributes to the degree of noisiness experienced by patients and those accompanying them. Noise level measurements were then conducted by 15 min equivalent sound pressure levels (LAeq, 15m, dB) during daytime hours. The average LAeq itself was found to be poorly related to perceived noisiness. Levels variations were better correlated, more continual noise may actually be perceived as noisier. According to the findings of a multiple linear stepwise regression model (r = 0.91, R = 0.83), the 3 independent variables shown to have the largest effects on perceived noisiness were 1) 1/(L5−L95), 2) effective duration of the normalized autocorrelation function (τe, h), of all LAeq, 15m over 9–17, and 3) percentile loudness, N5, 15m. These results resemble previous studies that had assumed that a larger fluctuation of noise level corresponds to less annoyance experienced for mixed traffic noise studied in a laboratory situation. As an advanced approach, for hospital noise that consisted of 12 audible noise events, subjective noisiness were evaluated by the noise time structure analyzed by autocorrelation with loudness and levels variation.

Subjective discomfort in children receiving 3 T MRI and experienced adults’ perspective on children’s tolerability of 7 T: a cross-sectional questionnaire survey

OBJECTIVES To explore the possible discomfort perceived by children participating in 7 T MRI research, and the age range in which children are most likely to tolerate it well. DESIGN A cross-sectional survey using age-appropriate questionnaires containing six measures of subjective discomfort (general discomfort, dizziness, noisiness, claustrophobia and feeling of cold or warm). SETTING For...

Non-intrusive Estimation of Noisiness as a Perceptual Quality Dimension of Transmitted Speech

This article presents a new approach to the non-intrusive quality estimation of transmitted speech. Traditional estimation methods exhibit limitations to providing diagnostic information and for practical monitoring purposes. The new approach merges solutions to overcome the existing limitations and intends to provide a new user-friendly estimator. We present an overview and the planned structu...

Similarity Measures for Chinese Pop Music Based on Low-level Audio Signal Attributes

In this article a method of computing similarity of two Chinese pop songs is presented. It is based on five attributes extracted from the audio signal. They include music instrument, singing voice style, singer gender, tempo, and degree of noisiness. We compare the computed similarity measures with similarity scores obtained with subjective listening by over 200 human subjects. The results show...

Subjective Logic Extensions for the Semantic Web

Subjective logic is a powerful probabilistic logic which is useful to handle data in case of uncertainty. Subjective logic and the Semantic Web can mutually benefit from each other, since subjective logic is useful to handle the inner noisiness of the Semantic Web data, while the Semantic Web offers a mean to obtain evidence useful for performing evidential reasoning based on subjective logic. ...

Assessment of the Levels of Airborne Bacteria, Gram-Negative Bacteria, and Fungi in Hospital Lobbies

AIMS We assessed the levels of airborne bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria (GNB), and fungi in six hospital lobbies, and investigated the environmental and hospital characteristics that affected the airborne microorganism levels. METHODS An Andersen single-stage sampler equipped with appropriate nutrition plate agar was used to collect the samples. The three types of microorganisms were repeate...
